Braille Production
with Duxbury Braille Translator
Training For Transcribers
Learn how to get the most from your
software while you save time and effort.
Customised Training
With some notice of your booking, we are
able to incorporate a section in your course which answers trainees' questions
and goes through the answers in a practical fashion - embosser setup questions,
braille formatting questions, language and mathematics production questions are
just a few of the issues we have covered for trainees in past sessions. From the
very basic "What can Duxbury actually do?" to the more complex "How do I mix
English and Welsh in a document", we are able to go through the information
step-by-step.
We are even able to incorporate this
customised information into your training handbook!
Small Or Large Groups
Whether you have two trainees or twenty,
we can design a course for your group. It can even be more economical for you if
you have a large group; call us and talk about your needs.
Basic Duxbury Training:
This covers the basics of Braille
production, from preparing a document in Word for Windows or Duxbury, through
translating to embossing. We show you the possible pitfalls and how to avoid
them, and the basics of formatting Braille documentation. There is plenty of
practical, hands-on experience for trainees, and a comprehensive set of training
notes is given to each trainee.
- General use of templates and Styles in both Word and DBT
- The creation of Templates to simplify different production requirements
- The use of files in Word for the production of both Large Print and Braille
Students are also introduced to
the basic notions of embedded foreign languages and mathematics.
Course duration: 1 day; 6 hours of training with breaks. Usually 9am - 4pm.
Location: At
your site or in our Northampton Training Room for up to five trainees. Training
at your site requires access to at least one computer per two trainees, with
Duxbury 10.5 installed; we recommend that at least one embosser and if possible
an ink printer is also available.
Cost:
Dependent on the location and the number of trainees; please call us for
details.
Advanced Duxbury Training:
This course is intended for
transcribers whose Braille knowledge is good; it gives transcribers a collection
of powerful tools, including in-depth use of Styles and Templates in Word, and
general Word use when preparing documents which may be required in Braille.
Although the emphasis is on Braille production, attendees find that this course
helps to improve general Word skills considerably. The use of special DBT
embedded codes is explained along with the Table of Contents Generator. Foreign
Languages are covered in detail. There is plenty of practical, hands-on
experience for trainees, and a comprehensive set of training notes is given to
each trainee.
- Scanning
- Text from an outside source
- Embosser Problems
- Contact Points
Trainees are introduced to
Braille Mathematics, using Scientific NoteBook; files from this program can be
imported directly into DBT. Scientific NoteBook is also an excellent program for
producing print
maths, as well as Large Print versions of the same material.
The course can also touch briefly
on the basics of producing Braille Music using GOODFEEL software from Dancing
Dots. DBT 10.5 allows direct importing of GOODFEEL files. This section
requires that GOODFEEL be installed on your systems for courses conducted at
your site.
